The AWS Competition

AWS is the acronym for "Amazon Web Services Start-Up Challenge". The previous blog post below I opined about Amazon's elastic cloud concepts and their openly published web services associated with technology they've built and/or their infrastructure. As promised I reviewed some of the case studies they've published - they're impressive. Click here to read more about the challenge and the winners.

One company that impressed me is "MileMeter"...(they just came second) providing vehicle insurance on a per mile used basis :

Their web site isn't finished yet but there are some great links from it to a video describing their intention/service and their blog. I love this kind of disruption and sway of control into the consumers hands. Think about it...you pay so much insurance per month...fixed...but what if you never really used your vehicle that particular month/months/year? - why should you be paying when your car isn't on the road and relatively safe from being pranged?

P.S. MileMeter is starting their busuiness with Amazon.com providing all the needed commerce reuse and hosting services for them!

Stafford,

Thank you for your kind words, and interest in, MileMeter! We enjoyed competing in the Amazon Web Services contest, and had the opportunity to meet some very talented entrepreneurs and technologists.

While "per mile" auto insurance is intuitive to you and me, the insurance industry has avoided offering it for a very long time. The only way to force change was to create a new competitor -- MileMeter.

We will begin selling policies later this year. In the meantime, we'll keep posting to our blog.

Cheers,
Chris
MileMeter CEO
